Honours BA in Policing

I chose Laurier simply because of the good reputation they have and the structure of the program. It was very flexible and catered to students in my situation who work shift work and often have families.

What made you take the next step to pursue your education?

I decided to pursue the next step in my career because it had always been my goal to get my degree. When I looked into this program, the courses and the structure, I realized that now was the time. I had the support of my service as well as my family as I knew this would require some juggling.

What was the admissions process like? (detailed step by step explanation)

The admission process was seamless. My service (HR) was very helpful and putting together documents that were required by Laruier such as length of career and courses. I was able to submit that directly to Laurier along with previous transcripts and from there the process was very quick and efficient. I also had to get approval from my service through the chain of command which involved a document outlining the length of course, cost and its relativity to policing but with a BA in "Policing" it was impossible for them to deny!

What did your enrolment advisor help you with throughout the admissions process?

My enrollment advisor assisted along the way with detailed explanations about what would be required and by when, in order to be ready for the next term session. They were available over the phone as well as electronically any time I had a question.

What were you looking to get out of your degree?

Firstly, I was looking to get a degree as it was a life goal in order to better myself as well as sharpen my skills and knowledge to make me a better police officer. I found the courses very relevant to my current work as well as up to date with current events and climates in general. There were many topics covered that only after completing them, did I realize how little I actually knew. I was looking to make new contacts and engage in discussion with other fellow colleagues from all over Canada. Also, I was looking for a challenge.

Why did you choose Wilfrid Laurier University?

I chose Laurier simply because of the good reputation they have and the structure of the program. It was very flexible and catered to students in my situation who work shift work and often have families. Despite following the recommended structure, it was easy to go at your own pace if need be or take breaks along the way when life got too hectic. I was also appropriately advised about the demands of the course which I found to be very accurate.
