My name is Kevin Guest and I am currently employed in the private sector with GardaWorld, as a corporate security investigator. I completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Policing (BAP) at Wilfrid Laurier University and have recently started my Master’s of Public Safety degree at Laurier.
After a long career in policing, I wanted to learn more about the challenges my former colleagues were facing. On commencing my BAP, I was working with GardaWorld as a corporate security investigator assigned to Ontario and Western Canada.
I became interested in this field of study as a reaction to the contemporary issues facing Canadian police officers. I was particularly interested in what other jurisdictions were doing to problem solve and to serve diverse communities.
I taught for several colleges in their Police Foundations programs and wanted to pursue teaching positions at a higher level. Continuing my education was essential to attain this goal. I am a lifelong learner and want to possess the best information to pass along to future officers. I am a firm believer that all officers should have post secondary education that is applicable to policing.
The online aspect of learning was perfect for me because I was often travelling for my job and scheduled classes did not fit my personal or professional lifestyles.
Upon graduating, I am happy to report that I have gained a greater understanding of policing and the associated challenges. I have a much broader vision of Canada’s diversity and the essential role it has in our culture. I was also able to explain many of the frustrating and disappointing aspects of policing I had experienced over decades of service. Finally, the degree made me a critical thinker able to source and research many interesting topics.
I would suggest this program to any active or retired officer that wants to better understand and serve the public.
